Chapter 11. Using Recognition and Rewards

There is a common misconception in management that recognition and rewards are the antidote to most employee attitude problems. If employees are not working hard enough, if they are making too many mistakes, if their attitudes are negative, if they are missing performance goals, if they are quitting in excessive numbers, then surely the problem can be fixed with a raise, bonuses, options, prizes, certificates of appreciation, a contest, or something of the sort. But usually it is not that simple.
