The key point to remember from this chapter is that opportunities to succeed at something important are highly motivational. They stimulate intrinsic motivation (when viewed from a positive emotional framework—see Chapter 5) and are therefore a powerful lever for motivational management. Yet most employees do not have meaningful, exciting challenges to pursue in their work—or if they do, they lack needed skills or resources to do so. To harness the power of opportunity, you need to make sure your employees are focused on doing important work and that they have the ability to do it well. Then their natural desire to achieve will kick in and give them a high level of motivation.
