Invite Participation

Inviting participation means drawing employees out and also drawing them in. You draw them out by signaling that you want to listen to their ideas or concerns. You draw them in by focusing their attention on a specific decision or concern of your own. Any techniques that achieve both of those goals—that get employees to open up to you and get them to focus on an important topic—are going to be motivational. We will look at some specific techniques in a moment, but first let's discuss who should be invited to participate.
