Overcoming Barriers to Motivational Communication

The reason motivational communication is essential to motivational management is that employee motivation is a feeling. People feel motivated, or they don't. If an employee feels unhappy about an assignment, that feeling is in essence negative motivation. Feelings and thoughts combine to shape behaviors, so when you have negative feelings, they are bound to get in the way of great performances, even if the thoughts, the necessary information and knowledge, are present. Joan in the above example will not feel good about doing the extra work the way it was presented to her. Exercise 3-2 presents a better approach to her problem.
