Avoiding Demotivational Management

Here are some things that we have all seen over and over in workplaces—but that we want to try to avoid in the future. Why avoid these behaviors? Because they may generate increased effort in the short term, but they do it only by forcing performance through external leverage, and this happens at the expense of internal initiative. So try to avoid the following common actions:

  • Raising your voice to show employees you are irritated or angry about their performance

  • Threatening to withhold resources or opportunities

  • Warning employees that you are going to ''review the troops'' or otherwise check their work and they better be ready (or else)
