  1. Ask employees what they want to accomplish.

  2. Recognize and take advantage of employee's natural urge to achieve meaningful objectives.

  3. Make sure employees are doing work that has a clear purpose, that interests them, and that they have the ability to do well.

  4. Articulate a big-picture goal worth pursuing.

  5. Check and adjust the level of challenge to make sure no one has too much or too little.
