  1. Avoid the misuse of incentives that do not appeal to the targeted employees.

  2. Recognize the influence of life-stage and personality on work motives so as to be more aware of what each individual may need and want from their work.

  3. Use the Incentive Profile to find out what your own dominant work motives are.

  4. Use the Incentive Profile to find out what each of your employees' dominant work motives are—and see how they differ from each other's and your own.

  5. Run participative discussions with employees to explore their work motives and come up with ways to match them better as you assign tasks and recognize their contributions.
