One reason that businesses rarely measure employee motivation is that motivation isn't a simple, one-dimensional thing, like profit, for instance. Recall Exercise 1-1, in which you described your ideal employee. You probably listed multiple characteristics that together add up to your view of a highly motivated employee. So to measure motivation, it is necessary to look for multiple indicators. You can develop your own measurement method in which you rate how strongly your employees are exhibiting each of the characteristics you hope to see as a result of your motivational management efforts.
