INSTRUCT YOUR MENTEE

When you become a mentor, explain these general rules and guidelines for effective mentoring to the other person. Have the mentee come to you with a written list of questions or concerns. Schedule your meetings in ten-minute blocks or longer if you have the time. Have a specific starting and stopping time. Be punctual for the meeting, and end the meeting at the time agreed.

Parkinson’s Law says, “Work expands to fill the time allotted for it.” If you allocate ten or fifteen minutes to a mentoring session, and the mentee is aware of that, you will be happily surprised at how quickly you get through all the items on the list in that short period of time.
