Four Steps to Management by Objectives

There are four steps to the process of management by objectives:

1. Get a clear agreement on exactly which goals and objectives are to be accomplished. This step requires that you be clear about the goal but flexible about the process of achieving it. Management by objectives requires participatory management and a complete discussion so that there is total agreement between you and the employee about the job to be done.

2. Discuss with the individual the various ways that the goal might be achieved or the job completed. Based on your experience, you provide your ideas and input, giving suggestions and advice about the best way to accomplish the task.
