LIGHTING HD, DV, AND SD VIDEO

The differences between lighting for film and video, whether it be high def (HD), digital video (DV), or standard def (SD) are not as great as sometimes imagined. Everything we have discussed about basic lighting applies equally to film and all forms of video.

There are, however, some differences between film and video as imaging media, the most fundamental of which is the capacity to handle contrast. While film negative can handle ranges of seven to eight stops (128:1, 256:1) and even more, most video systems cannot reproduce that contrast range.
