Customizing the Search Results

In many cases, the Search Results Web Part provides an adequate way to display the results from user queries; however, they can be customized to shows results in different formats. For this example, the search results are customized to display results in a table format with two columns instead of just one.

To provide the functionality required, you’ll use a technique that includes the following.

  • Modifying the Search Core Results Web Part to return results in XML

  • Creating a new data source in SharePoint Designer (SPD) and formatting the results in the requested format through making XSLT changes

  • Using the created XSLT in the Search Results Web Part to format the search results
