Site Collections—The What, the Why, and the When

A site collection is a collection of sites for administrative purposes. Site collections are typically created in Central Administration by a SharePoint administrator, however, they also can be enabled to be created from the Site Directory by users with the Use Self-Service Site Creation permission. Before we discuss how to create a site collection from either location, you need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of separate site collections so you can decide whether to have many site collections or just one for your implementation.
