INTRODUCTION

Rarely has there been a stronger call in our country for principled, ethical, effective leadership. And every day, my definition of leadership as “a matter of how to be, not how to do” becomes more cogent, more logical, and more imperative. This is the message that is the basis of everything I write about, speak about, and try to live: “Leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do. It is the quality and character of the leader that determines the performance, the results.”

This was the essence of my work with the Girl Scouts of the USA for 13 years and was the basis of our adventure in leadership with the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, later named the Leader to Leader Institute, and, in January 2012, ...
