There are many blocks that are available in a standard Moodle installation. Perhaps the most popular one is the CALENDAR block, which you can position so that it appears prominently in the corner. The CALENDAR block is an excellent tool, because it allows you to remind students of deadlines and key milestones.
The Course completion block is extremely useful as an engager and motivator, because you can both remind students where they are in the course and also reward them for progressing well through the course.
