Extending Dynamic Range in the Field
One of the most important aspects of monochromatic HDR—particularly the multi-shot variety—is to extend the range of what can be captured well beyond the tonal-range capabilities of any single exposure, and indeed beyond the range of what can be perceived by the human eye in a single glance. If you think about it, this is a pretty incredible technical capability: it is possible, using the monochromatic HDR techniques shown in this book, to render an image showing detail that is well beyond the capabilities of the human eye, if it was looking directly at the scene.
