Unix

As we have already mentioned, Mono is a free implementation of the .NET Framework. Although Mono is available for Windows platforms, Unix is the more widespread operating system for Mono. In this section, we discuss how Mono can be installed on Linux systems.

Installing Binaries

The fastest way to install Mono on Linux is to use RPM packages. RPM is a system provided by Red Hat, which is widely used on Linux. Today, many Linux distributions rely on RPM packages. Even on modern RS/6000 machines, RPM can be used (in combination with AIX and Linux).

RPM packages for Mono can be downloaded from www.go-mono.org. To install the binaries, you can use

 [root@localhost monorpm]# ls libgc-6.1-1.i386.rpm libgc-devel-6.1-1.i386.rpm mono-XXX.i386.rpm ...
