In the beginning, there was nothing. That's how people can see the situation as it was some time ago, but in the meantime, the Mono project has gained ground and many new features have been added to the framework.

As we have already mentioned, the target of the Mono project is to provide a free implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework. One of the highest priorities is to obtain compatibility with .NET. After you've dealt with Mono, .NET, and C#, you'll see that the Mono development community sticks very closely to Microsoft's specifications. That's not always simple and it's a huge challenge for everybody working on the product.
