One night after work, ten women gathered to discuss how they manage family and career. “Don’t you think part of the problem is all the literature about having it all?” one of the women asked the group. “Do you think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves that we have to want all that?”

“I think there’s a backlash against [the idea that] we have to have it all,” said another, an HR director for a large insurance company. “Did you read that article?” she asks the group, referring to the Atlantic piece by Anne-Marie Slaughter, in which she discussed the difficulties of balancing her high-powered position at the State Department with her responsibilities to her teenage sons.
