Abstract:

Models used in engineering design are refined as the design moves forward and as uncertainties are eliminated. This modelling process can involve tiers, starting with descriptions that are of relatively low fidelity and leading to a model at the final tier that is a detailed description of the system in service. At every stage within this process of stepwise refinement, models may be developed using a layered structure, starting with a description of the physical components and leading to a network-based representation and then to mathematical and computer-based descriptions.
