Modeling and Dimensioning of the Iub Interface
Bearing in mind the time needed for network expansion and the huge costs involved, as well as the potential for cost savings, operators of cellular networks are inclined to implement technological solutions that optimize investments but, nevertheless, make it possible to retain the complexity and quality of service.
The dimensioning process for the third-generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) should make it possible for individual elements of the system to secure the required grade of service (GoS) given the assumed load on the system.
One of the most important elements of the architecture of the UMTS system is the radio access network. The functions of UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) are performed by two basic elements: by the Node B base station and by the Radio Network Controller (RNC) connected by the Iub interface (Figure 12.1). The present chapter proposes methods for dimensioning of the Iub interface.
12.2 Example Architecture of the Iub Interface
