Modeling and Dimensioning of the Radio Interface

This chapter presents some examples of the application of the methods and models discussed in Chapters 5, 6 and 7 for modeling the radio interface in the cellular network in everyday engineering practice. The examples allow us to analyze the radio interface of a single cell in a single-service and multi-service network. The phenomenon of soft capacity and its influence on methods applied in the analysis of the radio interface is also taken into consideration. The chapter also presents models of the interface servicing HSPA traffic (Section 2.8) and traffic with priorities for services and for groups of users.

11.1 Modeling of Resource Allocation in the Radio Interface of Mobile Cellular Networks

A single cell of the mobile system can be treated as a full-availability group with constant or variable capacity, depending on a possible influence of the environment upon the load of the radio interface. In the first part of the book GSM, UMTS and LTE standards were presented. Radio interface in the GSM system can be treated as an example of a hard capacity system, whereas the radio interface in the UMTS or in the LTE system is an example of a soft capacity system.
