Chapter 6

Modeling of Systems with Single-Rate Overflow Traffic

6.1 Introduction

This chapter presents the basics of the analysis of telecommunication systems employing the strategy of redirecting traffic via alternative routes — systems with traffic overflow. Modeling telecommunication networks with alternative routes is a complex matter and requires two basic problems to be solved, namely: determination of characteristics of traffic that overflows from direct groups, and determination of the number of links in alternative groups, where the loss coefficient will not exceed the assigned value. The chapter presents the Riordan method for a determination of the parameters of overflow traffic and then, the equivalent random traffic method and the Hayward method for dimensioning systems that are offered overflow traffic.

6.2 Basic Information on Overflow Systems

6.2.1 Simplified Classification of Groups in Telecommunication Networks

In the hierarchical telecommunication network, two types of groups are used:

  • primary groups;
  • overflow groups (alternative groups).

In primary groups, traffic is carried with congestion greater than the assumed loss probability. Traffic that is not carried in the group overflows to an alternative group. In these groups the congestion is not higher that the assumed loss probability. Traffic that is not carried in the alternative group is lost.

6.2.2 Alternative Paths

The basic problem in the analysis of network with alternative traffic routing is the proper ...
