Diffusion

A large portion of phase transformation reactions in solid-state matter involves the long-range diffusive transport of atoms because the equilibrium chemical composition of the participating phases commonly differs from one phase to the other. If one phase grows on the expense of another phase, atoms are redistributed between the two phases and the atomic diffusive transport often represents the governing physical mechanism controlling the kinetics of the phase transformation progress.
