From the Newton to the iPhone

The first mobile information platform was probably a piece of stone or clay with markings on it, used for recording numeric information. As languages and the writing technology developed, human civilization progressed onward to the papyrus scroll and ink pen. With the invention of printing by early 1800’s, the printed book became the preferred mobile platform for accessing standardized information in a portable format.

Pen and paper and books remained the platforms of choice until the late 20th century. Even though recording devices (photographical and audio recorders) were invented over the past 100 years, they were not mobile platforms for the masses.
