24.5 HIERARCHICAL MANAGEMENT MECHANISMS

To reduce the network traffic and provide an efficient query, some other researchers proposed hierarchical management mechanisms that support multilayer storage architecture to efficiently store the sensing information and response the queries. This subsection reviews the zone-based and cluster-based architectures.

24.5.1 Zone-Based Mechanism

Several zone-based mechanisms have been proposed for hierarchical management of data storing and retrieving. The main idea of the zone-based mechanisms is to partition the whole WSN region into several zones and elect a leader in each zone for efficient management of data storage and query requests. Le et al. [11] proposed a zone-based storage architecture where each sensor node needs not to be aware of its own location information. On the basis of the zone-based management, the proposed mechanism provides a hierarchical management of data queries.

The design of the architecture relies on a novel concept of node contribution potential and a distributed clustering algorithm operating on this concept. They assume that the sensors nodes are uniformly deployed over the monitoring region. All sensors have equal transmission range, though they may have different initial energy or storage spaces.
