10.8 SUMMARY

This chapter has described the design and realization of LBSs in the context of Web 2.0. While the first generation of LBSs failed in many countries because of an inherent orientation toward a closed, network-centric solution and the lack of appropriate positioning technologies, the Web 2.0 paradigm incorporates several approaches and concepts, for example, user-centricity, mashups, and social networking, the next generation of LBSs may profit from. Regarding “the web as a platform” and combining it with user-centric positioning methods like GPS is the key for including a large number of users and utilizing their creativity when developing new forms of LBSs. This chapter has given examples for such new forms by proposing a classification scheme for LBSs. It has introduced a generic supply chain for their implementation and explained the need for establishing operations and mechanisms of position management. Finally, this chapter has addressed the need for privacy protection, sketched basic mechanisms for it, and discussed open questions in this context.
