This chapter addresses the end-to-end performance of one particular IMT-Advanced system, namely the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) LTE-Advanced (LTE-A). This technology moves forward from 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) Release 8 (Rel-8), which is currently starting to be deployed in selected countries, including some of the innovations described in the previous chapters. By LTE-A we refer to Release 10 (Rel-10) and beyond of the 3GPP LTE standard. This version of LTE was submitted to the International Telecommunication Union – Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) for evaluation and obtained the official International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced (IMT-Advanced) label. The Wireless World Initiative New Radio + (WINNER+) project evaluated LTE-A in its role as official IMT-Advanced Evaluation Group.

The chapter starts with a description, in section 10.1, of the ITU-R process for defining IMT-Advanced radio access technologies. The ITU-R evaluation scenarios and performance requirements are characterized. Then, some key features of LTE Rel-10 are introduced in section 10.2, clarifying which of the technologies described in the previous chapters are included in this system. The performance of LTE-A in International Telecommunication Union (ITU) scenarios, according to the 3GPP ...
