Fixed Wireless

Several types of fixed wireless exist. Some providers are using this technology to compete with cable operators to send cable television channels to a wireless receiver. This is also being used to send high-speed Internet data across a wireless connection at speeds similar to a cable modem or DSL line. LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Services) and MMDS (Multipoint Microwave Distribution System, or Multi-channel Multi-point Distribution System) are common acronyms for this type of fixed wireless transmission. In addition, some handheld technologies can take advantage of fixed wireless.
