Glossary
0 dB Zero decibels, a common reference point for discussing sound levels. Levels above 0 dB are expressed as positive (+1 dB); levels below 0 dB are expressed as negative (–1 dB).
acoustic instrument An instrument without pickups or built-in electronics that requires a microphone for recording.
acoustical foam A type of sound-absorbing foam used to deaden recording studios.
acoustics The science that deals with sound and its physical properties.
active speaker A loudspeaker with a self-contained power amplifier. Most studio monitors (and all computer speakers) are active speakers.
