ILYINTSY, UKRAINE

At the home of returnees to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, tomatoes, homegrown on contaminated soil, await consumption.

Originally there were two sources of light the room: the windows and a bare bulb dangling from the ceiling. The intention of the image, however, was to show both the tomatoes in the sink and the man setting his table. Without an additional strobe, neither the tomatoes nor the reflection in the mirror would have been visible. I stood on a chair and pointed my camera down toward the sink and mirror, and turned my strobe backward on an angle so it would bounce light off the ceiling.
