Minus 2/3 – The Invisible Flash

LUBYANKA, UKRAINE

In the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, a 54-year-old returnee’s skin has aged considerably, a condition doctors attribute to radiation exposure. He has lived by himself since his wife’s death in 2006 and is increasingly troubled by loneliness in his isolation.

This room contained multiple tungsten and fluorescent light sources that would have left the right side of the man’s face completely dark. To combat this issue I pointed my strobe toward the right wall and bounced light onto my subject.
