NORTH SHORE, CALIFORNIA, USA

The number of tilapia (and other fish) in the Salton Sea has significantly decreased due, in part, to oxygen-depleted waters. Massive fish die-offs struck in the late 1990s, with an estimated 7 million fish dying on a single hot day in August 1999.

Because I took this image shortly after sunset, the hundreds of fish accumulating at the seashore would not have been visible without the use of a strobe. To focus the viewer’s attention, I zoomed the strobe tighter than the lens, thereby also mirroring the shape of the brightness in the sky.
