DONETSK, UKRAINE

After a day in the pits, a coal miner scrubs down. Though relatively well paid, miners face equipment breakdowns and gas explosions as they extract Ukraine’s high-grade coal.

During the time I still shot with film and before my transition to E-TTL, high ISO ratings, as commonly used in digital photography today, would have resulted in a loss of image quality. In order to capture this coal miner’s expression, create a sense of place, and reveal the depth of the room, I used a slow shutter speed combined with a flash attached directly to the camera. The unintended blurriness of the subject’s arm adds eeriness to the image.
