Modern Turkey was created out of the ruins of the Ottoman empire after the First World War. It was a new and independent country, predominantly Muslim, western oriented, confined mainly to Anatolia, with a democratic and secular government run by ethnic Turks in the capital, Ankara. In all these respects it differed from its predecessor, the despotic, oriental regime of a multicultural European and Asian empire based in Constantinople.
