France is Europe’s largest country after Russia. It borders on six countries and has coastlines on the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and the Channel. With close on 60 million inhabitants, the population density is one of the lowest in Europe. The geography, climate, history, and culture are extremely varied, embracing regions as different as Brittany, Alsace, Provence, and the Basque country.

There is a strong attachment to one’s home region and a reluctance to transfer between regions, the exception being a move to Paris. Even if people have worked all their lives in Paris, they will often consider themselves Parisian only if they were born there. True Parisians regard a transfer to the provinces as exile.
