BUT WHAT KIND?

I will leave the technical aspects of creating a company—and they are important, I’m not dismissing them—to a separate chapter. For now, I want to focus on one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make about your future: Will you be a solo practitioner, or will you employ resources?

I mean “employ” in the true sense of salaried employees with health benefits, retirement plans, sick days, expense accounts, and so forth. (I’ve discussed subcontractors, alliance partners, and outsourcing elsewhere.) Some people believe that a staff is the default position for growth. It ain’t necessarily so.
