As mmWave communication is primarily a physical layer (PHY) communication technology, much of the focus in this book has been on the physical layer and below, including circuits, antennas, and baseband considerations. Specific features of mmWave communication, however, have influenced the design of higher layers, especially the data link layer and the medium access control (MAC) protocol sub-layer (see Section 2.10 from Chapter 2 for background on the layer terminology).
