Regardless of your background with prior generations of Word, this chapter will help you get started quickly. If you're new to Word, this chapter escorts you through the basics, so you're ready to begin your journey toward becoming an expert. If you've been using Word for years, there are many new wrinkles that I'll point out along the way. This chapter also explores startup methods, navigation nuances, view variations, and saving options. The final section takes the "just dive in" approach, and will have you writing and printing a letter and envelope in 15 minutes or less. If you've never used Word before, you might want to jump ahead to "Just Dive In," and then come back to Starting Word.

Starting Word

Mercifully, some aspects of Word have not changed much from previous versions, and starting Word is one of them. This book provides a brief overview of those features that haven't changed much, and a more in-depth look at those that have, as well as the impact of those changes. It describes things that work for both Windows XP and Vista. This book assumes that you're using Windows in its default configuration, although for many Bible readers that may be a bad assumption. I trust, however, that if you know enough about how to make Vista look and act like Windows XP, you'll be able to translate what is said into the steps that apply in your situation.
