Summary

This chapter introduced you to the basics for connecting a Windows XP computer to a network. More detail was probably provided than what is needed for a simple LAN. However, as you become more familiar with networking, you will find that more of this will start to make sense. Some of the topics covered in this chapter will be revisited in other chapters. For example, the next chapter will show you how to connect your computer to the Internet, using a dial-up connection. In that chapter, you will also learn about other important networking features such as how to use Windows XP's virtual private networking (VPN) features and the personal firewall accompanying the system.
