Using Standard Commands
Windows offers a good set of commands, operators, and pipes (special symbols used to redirect output from commands) that can help you accomplish a lot of work from the Command Prompt. You can also use batch files or script files to run a number of commands in sequence automatically.
If you have worked with MS-DOS or the command prompt before, you may have created batch files in previous versions of Windows. Before you learn about using MS-DOS commands at the Windows XP Command Prompt, it is a good idea to get rid of outdated MS-DOS commands in existing files; some of those older commands aren't supported in Windows XP. The next section explains how to clean out these old commands from your files.
