Serial Line Interface Protocol and Point-to-Point Protocol
A network adapter card attaches your computer to a network, and that card gets assigned an IP address. If you want to connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem, then you don't need a network card on your computer, just the modem. In that case, communications can be handled between your modem (a serial connection) and your Internet service provider (ISP) by using serial line interface protocol (SLIP) or point-to-point protocol (PPP).
