Chapter 7. Printing, Scanning, and Faxing

Paperless-office propaganda notwithstanding, computer users have felled forests to feed printers and preserve paper trails. In Windows, the operating system handles printing—not individual programs. When you print something in any program, you activate Windows’ intermediary printing system, which accepts print jobs from programs and feeds them to the printer. This process, called background printing, lets you keep working in your program while your documents print.
