2.4. Windows Deployment Services

Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is the replacement for the venerable Microsoft Remote Installation Services (RIS). It can be installed as one of the roles of Windows Server 2008. You can use WDS as a replacement for RIS, or you can work with RIS images in WDS in what is called "legacy" mode. As an organization migrates to Windows Server 2008 and WDS, you can even use a "mixed" mode, with a domain having both RIS and WDS servers. WDS requires Active Directory, and is most compatible with Windows Server 2008. Pure WDS-based deployments (when RIS isn't used) is considered to be a native mode. In native mode with Windows Server 2008, only WIM file-based installations are supported.
