6.1. The Windows NT File System

The Windows NT File System (NTFS) is the file system used exclusively by Windows Server 2008, and it has been the file system shipped with all versions since Windows NT. The file system has undergone numerous improvements over the years, some internal and some external, in order to support improved performance, reliability, devices, and so forth. Although the full specification of NTFS is proprietary to Microsoft, much is known about the NTFS file system, and through various APIs, developers have access to the file system at a very low level.
