4.7. Summary

Active Directory has been simplified through the use of the Windows Server 2008 management interface. Microsoft has consolidated a number of directory-related identity and access services under that same management interface, making a set of confusing servers more manageable. You'll find new ways to audit access to directory services in Windows Server 2008, as well as a new kind of secure domain controller for branch offices called the read-only domain controller. Previous versions of Windows Server forced you to restart AD whenever you needed to perform certain tasks such as defragmentation or backup. With this new version of AD, you can stop and restart domain services without needing to reboot.
