14.1. Server Core Basics

Server Core is a feature-reduced minimal installation of Windows Server 2008, installed as a role for Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter Edition. Server Core can be installed in the following server roles:

  • Active Directory (AD)

  • Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS)

  • DHCP Server

  • DNS Server

  • File Server

  • Media Services

  • Print Server

Server Core is meant to serve the role as a stable and low-maintenance infrastructure platform. Although it comes with management tools and utilities, and can support third-party agents, it is not an application server.
