Chapter 14. Server Core

Oddly one of the most talked about new features in Windows Server 2008 isn't new at all, and in a sense isn't Windows either. Windows Server 2008 Server Core is a stripped-down version that runs server roles: file server, domain controller, DNS, and DHCP services among others. Server Core runs in an environment that is less than 20 percent the size of a standard installation. You can use it to run Microsoft Cluster Server, Network Load Balancing, Windows Backup, Subsystem for Unix-based Applications (SUA), Removable Storage Management, SNMP, and BitLocker drive encryption, for example. You should expect to see more capabilities for Server Core in the future.
