4.6. Restartable Active Directory

The last of the additions to the AD that this chapter discusses is the restartable Active Directory Domain Service (AD DS). You can start and stop AD DS either from the Server Manager or by using a command-line command. The ability to stop and start the AD DS without rebooting the system requires less time for a domain server to be offline while undergoing routine maintenance. All Windows Server 2008 domain controllers have the restartable AD DS feature, regardless of any other services that they are performing.

To stop and start an AD DS:

  1. Open the Server Manager and click Active Directory Domain Services in the Services (Local) tree control.
