9.5. Network Connection Security

Although the Windows Firewall with Advanced Settings MMC and the Windows Firewall itself allow you to create inbound and outbound rules as well as define secure connection rules (in the MMC only), you can also set security on each network connection. Network connections use dialup, broadband (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet [PPPoE]), or VPN connections.

To require authentication and encrypt dial-up, PPPoE, or VPN data communications, do the following:

  1. Open the Network Connection folder and right-click on the connection you want to modify.

  2. Select the Properties command, then click the Security tab.

  3. Select Typical (Recommended Settings), then select Validate My Identity as Follows.
